About

The Self Made Edit is a magazine for women building their own thing: creators, freelancers and first-time founders.

Plenty of people will tell you to "just start." Far fewer explain what happens after that: how to price your work, what you owe in taxes, how to read a contract, what to do when your content gets stolen, how to grow when you don't have a marketing budget.

That's the part we cover. We write for women in their late teens and twenties who are earning online or starting a business, often without a manager, a mentor or anyone in the family who's done it before.

What we publish

  • Creators: growing an audience, protecting your content and treating your creator career like a business.
  • Business: starting, structuring and scaling, from the first sale to the first hire.
  • Money: pricing, taxes and the money conversations nobody prepared you for.
  • Growth: audience, content systems and marketing that works without a big budget.
  • Stories: real women on how they built it.

How we work

Every guide is checked against primary sources, like the IRS, the FTC, the Copyright Office and the platforms' own help pages, and we link to them so you can check our work. When rules change, we update the article and show the date. You can read the details in our editorial policy.

We're clear about money, too. Sponsored articles are labeled, and so is any business connection that touches an article. See our disclosures.

Get involved

We publish contributors from all over: creators, founders, freelancers and experts like accountants and lawyers. If you have a story or know something our readers should, pitch us. For partnerships, see advertise with us. For everything else, write to hello@theselfmadeedit.com.
